ITIL Version 3 - Hype vs Value
FACT
ITIL® V3 WILL impact every IT organisation using or referring to ITIL. If you are affected – or may be affected – then this is for you.
FACT
EVERYONE affected will have to understand the implications BEFORE attempting to decide how V3 will help and how to move forward.
FACT
V3 is here to stay. There will be amendments, additions, deletions on the way but the old ITIL library will disappear.
FACT
The exams are changing and although the Foundation will still remain, the Managers Certificate must disappear and a more specialised approach to qualification must take its place.
FACT
The original 10 processes and 1 function still exist AND there are an additional 14 processes and 3 functions to broaden the scope of ITIL Good Practice.
Existing ITIL projects
Every project will have to be reviewed – not necessarily changed but definitely reviewed in the light of the increased scope. Some projects may be extended to take advantage of this and widen the quality scope.
ISO20k, COBit etc
The wider scope of V3 will encourage quality implementation to move closer to the full integration and governance of IT as a full business partner integrated rather than just aligned with the business operations.
New benchmarks
Yes, benchmarking will change however, V3 gives us an opportunity to benchmark on a total view of IT not merely support and delivery. It also gives us an opportunity to set up a greater range of benchmarks, for example Strategy alone or development followed by operations. We could simply benchmark on how well continual improvement is managed – often thought to be at the heart of any ITIL1&2 improvement programme – yet there was little emphasis.
The hype
It is no secret that the publication of the V3 library has sparked a huge debate and opinion is sharply divided on the merits or otherwise of this new approach. We have heard from large and small organisations, from people new to the ITIL concept and from those who have been working with, teaching and implementing ITIL1&2 for years.
Change is always traumatic; change is always resisted at first. Some people will NEVER alter their views; extreme views always cloud issues as much as they may clarify.
Therefore, we say
- Understand the implications first – just what are the new guidelines?
- Review your own situation in the light of the new guidelines.
- Then, and only then, decide on how your plans will be affected or effected
- Plan to adopt and adapt to improve.
There are a series of half day Executive Workshops planned to help you answer the questions posed by what we have said. As a mover and shaker you will join the debate to clarify your understanding of what is involved.
Were you involved in the development of the ITIL V3 library? No? Well, we are going to feed the views from every Executive Workshop back into the system. If you want to have a say please join the debate.
